Giggly Pig (Romford) - Romford Banger

We saw some friends recently and they reminded us that they had previously dropped in some Giggly Pig sausages that they had bought at a farmers market near them in Essex. They asked had we had a chance to sample them. Oops! I eventually located the pack languishing in the polar wastes of our freezer. About time we tried them then...

The same friends incidentally had bought an alternative flavour pack at the time, and to be honest they said, they weren't that impressed. They didn't say which flavour though but I will ask next time we see them.

We've had some OK sausages from Giggly Pig in the past to be fair, so it is about time we gave their fare a go again. Mind you we're not entirely sure what a "Romford Banger" should be like if we are being strictly honest so we'll give them a go anyway and see...

I do note that Romford Bangers are not currently on the products list for Giggly Pig, so I wonder if these may have been some kind of special or trial flavour that were developed a few months ago. Hey ho. Their web site though does say 75 delicious flavours, so perhaps these do exist but just aren't listed.

80% pork from Giggly Pigs own saddleback pigs with oatmeal and onion, in natural skins that does sound very much OK to us. Quite small sausages size-wise we note though but looking quite good in their pack, well considering of course they've had a few months in the freezer. Doh!

Cooked up they browned nicely, with no splits or bursts. We did pan fry but as the skins seemed quite fine we did reduce the heat slightly and just "sizzled" them until done.

Do you know what, these were a pretty good tasting sausage. You get the slight onion and very good levels of seasoning. Good texture, probably medium, with some succulence and quite moreish.

If these are what Romford Bangers are all about, we should buy some more!  Yes please. Very nice.

Eaten when cold, quite firm, but still tasty.

However at £17.99 / kg these are probably the most expensive sausages we've sampled to date. We realise that businesses have increasing overheads but at this price we're talking practically a £1 per sausage here and these are small sausages.
