Becky's Butchers (Gt
Bromley, Essex) - Beef &
Horseradish
Becky's Butchers is on
Badley Hall Farm, Great
Bromley near Colchester,
Essex and is run by Becky
herself on the families
farm. As we were on our way
to friends at Thorrington
near by, it would have been criminal
not to call in to the farm
shop ourselves...
Becky's Butchers opened in
January 2017, offering
people with livestock the
chance to have their meat
butchered to the highest
standard. In 2021, Becky won
the Rising Star award and
she has been shortlisted for
the Meat Businesswoman Award
in 2025 which will be
anounced late November 2025. She was also a
finalist in the Butchers,
Deli and Farm Shop Awards in
2025.
Becky's
Butchery compete regularly
at Harwich Sausage Festival,
which they won with their
Pork and Leek sausage three
years in a row: 2018, 2019,
and 2020. They were crowned
the overall Champion in
2018. In the 2020 at Meat
Management awards evidently,
their Best Pork Sausage was
"Highly Commended".
With the beef we are told
being produced on the farm,
we thought we'd give the
beef and horseradish variety
a go. We bought these
already frozen as it
happens. Not that that
matters, but there was very
few fresh sausages available
on the day we rolled up.
We like
the zing and rasp of horseradish
as it happens, which you
can't really compare to
chilli to be honest, it has
a taste of it's own.
Now as they were already
frozen we kept them that way
until we were ready, and we
will admit, yes once again,
kept them a little longer
than planned in our polar
ice-station of a freezer.
Defrosted they certainly
looked no worse for wear for
their experience, so in the
old pan they went.
Nice to see decent
sausages in natural skins
though once again.
You know our views on those
sausages in their collagen
tubes!
Cooked up
they browned superbly well. No
splits from what seemed
fairly decent skins by the
way, however we were
surprised how much
additional oil came out of
these. Nearly 52ml extra in
the pan which is
considerable. Now this isn't
great as weight loss and
perhaps succulence will be
definitely noticeable.
A good meaty texture here
with a
fair succulence as it
happens given the level of
oil loss.
The skins cut really well
and the
bite and chew was not bad
either. But...
Where
was the horseradish? Good
sesoning and a beefy
tasting sausage but with no
noticeable horseradish
unfortunately. We
were a little disappointed.
Perhaps a mix problem when
they were made? Perhaps it's
there but our tastebuds
can't detect it? Next time we
call in I will broach the
subject. A good beef sausage
though.
Would we buy
them again. Let's see...
