The
Gog Farm Shop (Cambridge) -
Cambridge Royal
Produce from the Gog Farm
shop as we have found is
always a decent quality and
a good price. The butchery
in particular retails
excellent cuts and ranges of
meat. Their sausages have
always scored highly with
us. Quality outdoor reared
pork sourced from
high-welfare farms and mixed
and filled in to all natural
casings. Hand filled and
hand tied. Oh yes bring it
on...
We had a recent run up to
Granchester, near Cambridge,
for a riverside dog walk.
Granchester, you know, where
they filmed the Robson Green
TV drama series. Yes it's a
real place. The meadows and
riverside is a lovely walk.
After a coffee and cake stop
back at the very nice
Orchard Tea Rooms there (3
hours free parking if you
buy something), we headed
back to home avoiding the
M11 by going across country,
scenic route and all that,
and found ourselves
"accidentally" passing the
Gog Farm Shop! Oh dear...how
did that happen?
The Farm Shop has some
history as a long
established family business
operating a Shop and
Butchery, a Deli and a Cafe.
Runners up in the Butchers
Shop of the Year and
Observer Best Independent
Food Retailer competition
too. Winner of Great Taste Awards,
winner of The Great
British Food Awards and The Farm Shop & Deli
Awards and The
Observer Food Monthly Awards. In fact The Gog
has even featured on the
BBC’s "MasterChef", "Taste
of Britain", "The Great
British Menu" and even "The
Apprentice".
We last called in to the
farm shop during 2022 an
bought some
traditional porks
which incidentally went down
very nicely. The butcher
tells us on this visit that
the difference between the
traditional pork and these
Cambride Royals is some
white and cayenne pepper.
Certainly sounded good to
us, so in the bag with a
pack and some chipolatas as
the offer was 2 packs for
£10. Good value I'd say.
Cooked up the skins were
very good, nicely browned
with no splits or ruptures,
but a slight additional
amount of oil was noticed in
the pan though. Taste-wise
far superior to the
traditionals that we said
previously could have done
with a touch more seasoning.
You get the pepper in these
but it's not cayenne
overpowering all. Just
enough to give a decent
flavour.
Texture-wise though they
were a little disappointing
unfortunately. With such an
open texture the sausage
meat was very soft to bite
and chew.
We ate them as part of a
sausage, mash and thick
onion gravy, and even with
the above comments, they ate
quite well. No complaints.
Would we buy again, yes we
would.
