Tesco -
Pork & Caramelised Red Onion
We recently
bought some pork & onion
sausages ready cooked from our local
hot counter...not bad at all,
but...although we were advised these
were the same...they're not, they're
better!It appears
that the sausages that are sold via
the hot counter in this case are
supplied to the store in bulk
catering packs, the source being
unclear from what we can gather.
However,
the Tesco Finest - Pork &
Caramelised Red Onion sausages we bought
and tried this week are a good looking plump
"red tractor" snorker it would be
very fair to say.
Cooked up they are a sweet pungent tasting firm sausage with good skins
(no splits whatsoever pan or
barbeque cooked) and a medium
texture. With 74% meat and
then 15% caramelised red onion
onboard, inside natural pork
casings, they ooze with moisture and
sweetness which make for a lovely
presentation.
Now this powerful sweetness may be OK
as you munch through the
first one but as you're tucking in
to the next, it could be
close to overpowering. Two are
definitely enough for any super
hero!
Eaten cold next day, the skins had
taken on a slightly slimy sticky
clear coating of very sweet onion,
yet the middle was less sweet and
retained the good meaty texture.
The sweetness over-kill in the skins we thought
spoiled the overall result.
Perhaps reducing the
onion/sugar/cider vinegar content
down just a "tadge" would help.
Cooked on
the barbeque the results were
similar however the amount moisture
dripping out was a little more than
expected. The coals did
produce more of a smoky hint that
complemented the flavour, but the
heavy caramelised red onion once again
was on the edge of overpowering the taste buds
again, if we
are honest.
These sausages
are good, but may be far too sweet
and pungent for
some. "Oh go on then, give us
another one!"
